Exposure to Chemicals

Industrial Hygiene Consultation

Our industrial hygienists provide statewide technical consultation to employers, employees, citizens, and physicians and other health care providers in the assessment of exposure to chemical and biological hazards in the workplace, home, and other locations.

In the Occupational Health and Environmental Health areas, our industrial hygiene consultants:

  • Provide industrial hygiene consultations at the request of small private sector employers. These consultations are conducted in various industries including, but not limited to, furniture, textiles, and metal fabrication plants.
  • Evaluate and recommend ventilation controls for contaminants in industrial and laboratory settings.
  • Respond to physicians' inquiries about occupational health and exposure issues.
  • Provide industrial hygiene consultative services (including on-site evaluation) in the area of chemical and biological exposure hazards, as requested by physicians, local health departments, and other governmental agencies. For example, surveys are performed to evaluate potential indoor exposures from formaldehyde, pesticides, mold, carbon monoxide, and other environmental contaminants.
  • Provide training and technical support on indoor environmental quality-related issues to local health departments and other governmental agencies. One example is the training of county or local environmental health specialists in evaluation of moldy buildings resulting from flooding caused by hurricanes and storms.
